Illinois Home Performance Program
Illinois Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® is a statewide standard to identify homes that have improved their energy efficiency by 15% or more with the help of pre-approved contractors. It is part of the national Home Performance with ENERY STAR program that is administer by the U.S. Department of Energy in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Why should I care?
Because, in addition to lowering your bills and making your home more comfortable, energy efficiency can make your home more valuable. The ENERGY STAR certificate proves that you worked with an approved contractor to make extensive, energy efficiency improvements to your home. This certificate is shown when a home is listed for sale, and research indicates that it helps homes sell faster and for higher prices. After all, who wouldn’t want a more comfortable home with lower energy costs?
How do I get the certification?
The first step is getting an energy assessment from one of our participating contractors and telling them you want to earn the ENERGY STAR certificate. The contractor will identify how your home uses and wastes energy and pinpoint the most cost-effective improvements to satisfy the program requirements. You decide what improvements to make, we ensure the contractor does quality work and help you access potential rebates or loans. Once work is completed, the contractor will submit paperwork to be reviewed by the program sponsor who will issue you the certificate.
What do I do with the certificate?
You might want to show it to your friends and neighbors to help brag about your energy efficient home. You definitely want to show it to your REALTOR® when you sell your home. They can include it on the MLS database so potential buyers know that your home has energy efficient features and benefits. Research suggests that homes with a certificate documenting energy efficiency improvements sell faster and at higher prices.
